Why are blood red parrots so popular amongst the Chinese population?
This species was first created in Taiwan by crossbreeding different cichlids back in the 1980's. The ones we currently have for sale were created by crossing a synspilum with a red devil. In Chinese culture the colour red is associated with good luck, beauty and success. This is why blood red parrots have become the one of the ultimate Feng Shui fish since they radiate such a bright red colour. Chinese even go to the extent of keeping certain numbers of these fish in tanks. For example 8 or 18 fish signifies money and abundance, whilst 9 or 19 is considered for life longevity. It is believed that keeping these fish at home or in the workplace will attract more wealth, improve the health of those around and even keep the owner safe in an unfavourable situation. Many people even go to the extent of deriving lottery numbers based on the patterns and strokes of the parrots!
